Since March 2017, the completely redesigned MUSEUM SCHLOSS FÜRSTENBERG has opened its doors to visitors.
With around 20,000 objects, the museum has the most extensive collection of FÜRSTENBERG porcelain in the world. The collection covers all epochs in the history of the manufactory up to the present day. With the Reichmann Collection on permanent loan, one of the top-class private collections of early FÜRSTENBERG porcelain can also be seen in the museum.
If the exterior of Fürstenberg Castle, once built as a border castle and hunting lodge for the Dukes of Brunswick, has hardly changed, the visitor enters a modern museum world: the historic staircase with its breathtaking half-timbered construction is bright and airy. The colour tones of white, black and gold run through all areas of the museum.
The exhibition rooms are named after people from the history of FÜRSTENBERG and are each dedicated to a specific theme. This thematic structure makes a visit to the museum much more varied and exciting. Visitors can thus choose their own path through the exhibition, according to their individual interests.
The Old Polishing Room marks the beginning of the tour. Here, the history of the manufactory’s foundation is presented in the context of the economic and political interests of Duke Carl I of Brunswick-Lüneburg and the incredible challenges of porcelain production in the 18th century from today’s perspective.
In the Von Langen Cabinet, visitors encounter the “Kaffeegesellschaft”, the most elaborate porcelain sculpture that FÜRSTENBERG has ever produced. The journey continues in the Desoches Hall, where coffee, tea and chocolate pots have appeared as witnesses of the times throughout the centuries.
It is followed by the Rombrich Hall, dedicated entirely to the theme of decoration. A special highlight there is the “black box”, in which decorations on white vases come to life using sophisticated technology.
The Weitsch Hall is characterised by dining culture, where opulently laid tables impressively demonstrate the use of porcelain on the table.
Everything in the Feilner Hall revolves around form and design, from functional issues to material properties that influence the form.
The crowning glory of the museum visit is the entrance to the Visitors’ workshop, where porcelain makers demonstrate the art of porcelain production.
